This 2 day Rwanda gorilla trek is a perfect trip for travelers looking to experience the best of the country’s nature and wildlife in a short time. Whether you are a wildlife enthusiast, an adventure seeker, or simply someone who appreciates breathtaking landscapes, this tour provides a well-rounded and unforgettable journey through Rwanda.

Rwanda, often referred to as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” is one of the most captivating travel destinations in Africa. This small but incredibly diverse country offers breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and unique wildlife experiences. Among the top highlights of any visit to Rwanda is the opportunity to track mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, deep in the lush forests of Volcanoes National Park. Gorilla trekking is a rare and unforgettable experience, bringing visitors face-to-face with one of the world’s most endangered primates.

In addition to the thrilling gorilla trek, this itinerary also includes a visit to Lake Kivu, Rwanda’s largest freshwater lake, known for its stunning scenery, tranquil waters, and vibrant local communities. Here, you can unwind with a leisurely boat cruise, taking in the serene environment while learning about the lakeside way of life.

Day 1: Gorilla Tracking in Volcanoes National Park

Your adventure begins early in the morning. Wake up at 4:30 a.m., enjoy a hearty breakfast, and prepare for an exciting day. Your driver will be ready to pick you up by 5:00 a.m., setting off on a 2 to 2.5-hour drive from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park, home to Rwanda’s iconic mountain gorillas.

Upon arrival, you will proceed to Kinigi Park Headquarters for a detailed briefing by the park rangers. Here, you will be assigned a gorilla family and provided with important safety guidelines and trekking rules. Your driver will then take you to the designated starting point of your trek, depending on the gorilla group allocated to you.

The trek into the dense rainforest of Volcanoes National Park can take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas. Once you locate the gorillas, you will be allowed one magical hour in their presence, observing their behaviors, taking photos, and enjoying the once-in-a-lifetime experience of being close to these gentle giants.

After the trek, you will return to the park headquarters and proceed for lunch at La Palme Hotel or Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, where you can relax and reflect on the incredible experience. In the afternoon, you will embark on a scenic drive to Lake Kivu, one of the most beautiful lakes in East Africa. Upon arrival, check into your hotel – either Stipp Hotel or Lake Kivu Serena Hotel – and spend the evening at leisure, enjoying the tranquil lakeside environment.

Day 2: Boat Cruise on Lake Kivu & Return to Kigali

Wake up to the breathtaking views of Lake Kivu and enjoy a relaxed breakfast. Afterward, embark on a boat cruise on the lake, where you will explore the beautiful scenery, visit nearby islands, and observe local fishermen at work. This relaxing cruise offers a refreshing contrast to the previous day’s adventure and a chance to soak in the natural beauty of the region.

Following the boat cruise, return to the hotel for lunch before starting your 2-hour drive back to Kigali. Upon arrival in Kigali, you may opt for a brief city tour, visiting sites such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial, Caplaki Craft Village, or local markets (optional and time permitting). Finally, your driver will transfer you either to your hotel or directly to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight.
